2018 was a phenomenal year for dancehall and deejays, with some incredible newcomers, some amazing artists making impressive comebacks and some veterans showing that they still have the formula to success. All of these factors added together made it very difficult to choose one deejay for Deejay of The Year.
2018’s Deejay of The Year is… Govana
If you first heard of him as Govana or if you first heard of him as Deablo there has never been any doubt that he was very talented dating back to his days as part of J.O.P, but in 2018 Govana made the whole world acknowledge that talent.
Govana was a man on a mission in 2018, as he did not rest up in making sure his name remained at the top of dancehall. Coming into 2018 having already released a smash hit in November with ‘Breeze’ definitely helped Govana going into 2018, as well as his incredible 2017 release ‘Gyal Thief’.
Govana did not rest trying to maintain this momentum in 2018, as he kept dropping banger after banger, coming with ‘Bake Bean’, ‘One And Move’, ‘Champ’, ‘Shrimp Patty’, ‘Hombre’ and ‘Flavours’, not for a moment in 2018 was Govana out of the top deejays discussion. He even had enough time to fit in a collaboration with Spanish reggae-ton star Bad Gyal on ‘Open The Door’.
2018’s Reggae Artist of The Year, was again a hard award to decide with so many incredible artists continuing the long standing reggae tradition both in and outside of Jamaica and continuing to produce incredible music.
2018’s Reggae Artist Of The Year is… Protoje
Protoje has once again proved in 2018, why he is one of the most celebrated young talents in Reggae. His phenomenal album ‘A Matter Of Time’ proved once again why he is regarded as such an incredible talent, with standout tracks like ‘No Guarantee’, ‘Bout Noon’ and ‘Like This’. ‘A Matter Of Time’ once again proving why he is one of the best Reggae artists in the world right now.
2018, like any other year in reggae and dancehall was packed full of incredible songs from an incredible range of artistes, ranging from songs about the most explicit activities to those praising the almighty, you truly will not find two more diverse genres of music.
Song Of The Year was again another really difficult award to choose, due to the high volume of phenomenal music released in 2018.
The winner of Song Of The Year is… ‘Tuff’ by Rygin King
‘Tuff’ was the song of the summer this year bringing Rygin King to the upper echelons of dancehall, something which he had been working his way towards with an impressive stream of releases at the beginning of the year. ‘Tuff’ really cemented this progress and showed everyone in dancehall what Rygin King was all about and definitely made a lot more eyes move towards Montego Bay and the emerging scene in the second city. This was not only a huge song for Rygin King, but for the whole of Montego Bay.
2018 has been yet another phenomenal year for albums and mixtapes for reggae and dancehall, with some of the biggest artists releasing albums, with releases from Agent Sasco, Spice, Konshens, Popcaan, Ziggy Marley and Nesbeth, it was always going to be a hard decision to pick one album for Album Of The Year.
Our pick for 2018’s Album Of The Year is ‘Forever’ by Popcaan
‘Forever’ saw Popcaan release his second album, teaming up with Brooklyn based Mixpak and Dre Skull for their second album together, following on from 2018’s ‘Where We Come From’. Once again Mixpak and Popcaan collaborated perfectly, releasing an album that fuses a lot of different elements and influences.
‘Forever’ was a phenomenal album from Popcaan, once again showing his ability to cater for a wide range of musical tastes, with ‘Forever’ clearly showing Popcaan’s international marketability on tracks like ‘Dun Rich’ with Davido, ‘Through The Storm’ and ‘Body So Good’. Popcaan once again proved that he has the potential to grow even further internationally, as well as proving his incredible talent for producing dancehall that sticks closely to its roots.
It’s time to dedicate an award to the men and women behind the mixing boards, the people in the studio that make hit riddims and hit singles happen in reggae and dancehall. It’s time to announce the Producer of the Year, with so many incredible producing talents in Reggae and Dancehall, it was definitely a hard task picking just one producer for this award.
This years Producer of the Year goes to… TJ Records
TJ Records has been behind some of the biggest singles and riddims in 2018, kicking off 2018 in January with the incredible ‘World Vibes’ Riddim featuring the likes of Konshens, Vybz Kartel and Charly Blacks.
TJ Records’ year has gone from strength to strength, working with Masicka on the incredible inspirational track ‘Changes’ and his brand new track ‘New Year’, Vybz Kartel on ‘Under Water’ and ‘Deso It Deh’ and Spice on ‘Under Fire’. With the ‘Toco Loco’ Riddim, ‘Wizzle’ Riddim and ‘Zinc Roof’ Riddim all coming in 2018, TJ has shown why he deserves to be seen as one of the top producers in dancehall.
